In the photo above, I’m trying to lie as close to the edge of the MightySoft mattress topper as possible to demonstrate how much it compresses under my weight.
At a glance
The MightySoft is a low-cost fiberfill mattress topper that will add a touch of softness to a firmer mattress. It has a warm and cozy feel, which cold sleepers might appreciate in the winter.
Although it’s 10cm / 4 inches thick when fluffed, I found it compresses a lot under my weight. There’s still enough padding to feel comfortable and soften the mattress, but it’s not the same as a thick layer of memory foam or latex.
Pros
- Adds some softness to the bed.
- Cozy and warm in the winter.
- Well stitched.
- Straps to hold it in place.
- Machine washable.
- Low price (I paid £37.99).
Cons
- Compresses under body weight.
- Not as much body support as foam or latex.
- Thicker in the outer rim.
- Some may find it too warm in hotter weather.

Why the MightySoft?
In some ways, this article is part 2 in our little mission to find a mattress topper that adds some extra softness to our bed, and that’s compatible with our bed cooling and heating system.
I recently wrote about the Sleep Innovations dual layer topper, which we ended up returning, for various reasons. Too big, too thick, too warm, in a nutshell.
The MightySoft wasn’t exactly on my radar as I hadn’t noticed it before, and it’s not made by a well-known brand as far as I can tell. However, it caught my eye on Amazon because of the combination of low price for such a thick topper and good customer reviews.
I paid just £37.99 for a king size in the UK, on sale apparently from the usual price of £49.99, though you can never be sure how long Amazon products are on sale for compared to the usual price.
At the time of writing, it has over 4100 ratings, with an average of 4.3 out of 5 stars. Looking through, it seems that all the recent reviews are verified purchases too, which I always prefer to see, personally.
Considering the fact that mattress toppers can be significantly more expensive than this (even the Sleep Innovations cost three times more, and that still isn’t too bad), I was curious to see if it was worth the money and if I agreed with the generally positive feedback from people.
And of course, if it would meet our needs.
Packaging and first impressions
The topper was delivered in a standard, semi-squished brown Amazon box. Inside, there was a basic carry bag with handles, and the topper itself was vacuum packed inside that.
You can see in the photo below, that they really went to town with the vacuum packing. For a king-size topper this thick, I was impressed by how small they managed to get it.
After I opened the plastic wrap, the topper started expanding quickly. I was pleased to see that it looked quite neat and tidy straight out of the bag.
One of my criticisms of the Sleep Innovations topper was how creased and untidy the top fiberfill layer was, so it was a relief that this one looked much better to the eye.
Setting it up on the bed (24 hours later)
The instructions in the bag were to leave the topper for 24 hours so it can fully expand, and presumably get rid of any lingering smell.
It had a light ‘fresh from the factory’ smell, but nothing like the smell of brand new memory foam, for example.
After the topper woke from its 24 hour nap, I strapped it onto the bed. It has a thick elastic strap on each corner to secure it to the bed, which is great as it means less adjusting over time.
Our mattress is 11 inches thick, and I imagine the straps would stretch a couple more inches if you had a thicker mattress.
As you can see in the photo below, the padding of the topper is relatively thick and looks ready to go after it’s fully expanded.
Materials and thickness
The listing on Amazon describes the topper as having a hollow fiber fill and microfibre exterior. The materials are also listed as being OEKO-TEX 100 certified, which is always reassuring to see.
The topper is quilted, with separate squares containing the fill to prevent it from bunching up on one side over time. This is standard practice for a mattress topper, and I certainly wouldn’t choose one that had all the fill floating around inside (if that even exists).
They describe it as being 10cm / 4 inches thick. This is accurate when the topper is freshly shaken and fluffed up, but less true when you actually lie on it! This isn’t unusual for a fabric mattress topper, and even denser materials like memory foam, wool, and latex to a certain extent, will compress when you lie on them.
You can see in the photos below that when I compress one edge with my hand with a lot of force, the material compresses to far less than 10cm.
One point that bothered me slightly is that the outermost section of the topper appears to have more fill than the inside squares. If they designed it that way to prevent us from rolling out of bed, it’s kind of pointless as I haven’t fallen out of bed since I was about six years old.
Softness and support
The MightySoft mattress topper has a soft feel that my partner and I both quite liked.
Even though it looks like it compresses quite a lot in the photos above, it still adds a nice touch of softness to the mattress. I wouldn’t go as far as to say it has the old clichéd ‘sleeping on a cloud’ feeling, but it definitely softened our existing bed.
It’s important to understand, however, that it doesn’t provide the same kind of body cushioning as good memory foam or latex does. The Sleep Innovations that we tried recently, for example, had significantly more cushioning and body contouring because of the three inches of memory foam underneath the fiberfill layer.
Even though the topper compresses under our body weight, there is so much material to start with in that 10cm / 4 inch layer, that is at least doesn’t compress to nothing.
I do think that it will need some regular fluffing to keep the padding though. In my experience, fiberfill has a tendency to stay compressed once it’s been regularly squashed by the human body for 7+ hours night, month after month.
Temperature regulation
It took me all of five minutes to decide that this is relatively warm mattress topper. The Amazon listing described the exterior microfiber as ‘breathable’. However, I’ve tried enough different mattresses, toppers, and duvets over the years to know that thick fiberfill is rarely breathable.
As it’s December and quite chilly where I am, the warmth has been fine. And my partner really likes the cozy feel, being the cold sleeper that she is.
I’m not sure I would personally tolerate this one in the warmer months of the year though, unless it was a base for our cooling pad.
Compatibility with our bed cooling/heating system
For the last few months, we’ve been using the SleepMe Dock Pro bed cooling and heating system. As I said at the start of this article, I’ve been looking for a topper that we could use between the mattress and the Dock Pro pad that we lie on.
So, after trying the MightySleep for a few nights, I put the Dock Pro back on top of it. Importantly, it actually fit. Even with all the padding of the MightySoft, the Dock Pro cooling pad has a big enough fitted skirt that it can stretch over the top. It did make it all slightly bunched up though, so I’m still not convinced it’s the right choice for our very specific setup.
Cleaning
Conveniently, the topper can be machine washed and dried. This is one of the major benefits of fiberfill toppers compared to memory foam, latex, and sometimes even wool.
Who makes it?
When I buy products on Amazon, I’m always curious as to who is actually behind them. Sometimes it’s obvious, but there often isn’t a clear answer, such is the nature of Amazon.
Unfortunately, this is one of those cases where I wasn’t able to find out who is behind the MightySoft mattress topper. It’s the only product listed under that brand name at the time of writing, so despite having so many ratings, it may be a relatively new third party seller, which isn’t a problem in itself.
There are many third-party sellers on Amazon that don’t give any information beyond the product description, as this isn’t required by Amazon.
However, although they do have a website, it has no ‘About’ page. The site is not secure, with an http URL instead of https, and all the social media button links appear to be broken. I emailed them to ask who they are, but have not received a reply yet.
Verdict
For such a low price, I think the MightySoft mattress topper is good value for money, as long as you understand how the topper will feel once you lie on it.
It appears to be well stitched, so it will hopefully last a good amount of time. The corner straps are robust and flexible, and there was no bad smell.
While it’s great that it’s so thick, it will compress under your weight. So if you were expecting a thick layer of cushioning in areas like the hips, shoulders, or back, then it might not be enough.
But if all you need is an extra layer of soft padding, and you prefer a warmer surface to lie on, it’s one to consider.
As for us, we’re going to use ours for a few more nights with the cooling pad over the top before deciding whether it’s the right material and style or if a different type of topper might be a better option.
